‘Atelier’, from French atelier (workshop) from Old French astelier (carpenter’s workshop, woodpile) (14c.), from astele (piece of wood, a shaving, splinter,), astilla in Spanish, which is probably from Late Latin hastella (a thin stick) diminutive of hasta (spear, shaft), asta in spanish. Basically an atelier is the artist’s workshop. Mostly used for painters, sculptors and fashion designers.
In my years studying Architecture I used to wonder about how Giacometti’s atelier would be like. At ‘History of Art and Architecture’s course, we had seen some black and white pictures and drawings of his workshop and it seemed the most caothic and best place to be. I always wished for something like that.
Well, this is this place. Sometimes clean, sometimes empty, but others caothic as Giacometti’s one. Open to students and friends. But closed to ‘anyone ignorant of geometry’ as Plato would say. Geometry is related with logic, and logic with Philosophy, what is very important to have a good conversation.
It is the Equipped with tools and CNC technology as milling machines, 3d printers and laser cutters, but also wide open to its combination with traditional arts and crafts, mainly hand drawing, pottery and moulding. All the necessary stuff for technoemotional design.
