For what might be Barcelona’s most beautiful barbershop: Jota Barber Shop, Barcelona.
The original concept, developed by the architect Mariano Levi, transformed the ceiling into a continuous landscape of flowing timber ribs. A surface that visually stitches together the two different heights of the space, creating a single spatial gesture that guides the eye from one end of the shop to the other.
Whether these waves echo the organic movement of hair itself, or the gentle rhythm of the Mediterranean Sea just a few streets away, is left open to interpretation. What matters is the sense of calm movement they bring to the space.
Beyond the geometry, the challenge was to develop a straightforward hanging and assembly system, as the final installation would be carried out independently. Every rib, connection and suspension point was parametrically defined in Grasshopper, generating fabrication-ready data and nesting directly from the model.
A custom cable-tensioning system allowed the surface to be finely adjusted on site, ensuring the designed curvature emerged with precision from a collection of flat plywood components.
